One Million Vote For Public Medicare

PRESS ADVISORY FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Essex County, ON – The Windsor-Essex Health Coalition is a chapter of the Ontario Health Coalition, a volunteer-led group of Ontarians who support quality public health care. Together with 38 other chapters across Ontario, we are hosting a people’s referendum. The Ford Government has passed Bill 60, legislation that opens wide the door to privatize our healthcare system that has been in the public trust for 50 years.

This was not an election issue where people could vote for a government that would privatize our hospital services. This referendum is giving people an opportunity to send a message to the government, a democratic and transparent process that will demonstrate whether people support or oppose privatization.

All of these voting sites are being staffed by volunteers and are open to the general public. To vote, one must be a resident of Ontario at least 16 years old. We ask that you spread the word about these locations to your friends, family, and neighbours.

We will be opening the ballot boxes and counting the ballots in a public forum to further demonstrate the transparency of the referendum. The Tally Event will be on Sunday, May 28 at the Chapter Two Brewing Company, starting at 12 noon.

To announce the results of our local paper balloting and the online voting, we will be holding a Press Conference at the southeast corner of Prince Road and Glenfield Street at the new Hôtel-Dieu Grace Healthcare site. The press conference will be on Tuesday, May 30 at 10am.

While we have a secure online voting system, we strongly encourage and recommend that people vote by paper ballot, in-person, at any of the locations below. The paper ballots are a solid visual of Canada’s democratic one-person, one-vote system.
